Prepare Your Subaru for Winter

May 7th, 2025 by

With the temperatures dropping in Northern California, winter weather can impact your ability to travel in your Subaru confidently. While the climate isn’t as frigid as other parts of the country, there are precautions that still need to be taken to optimize your car’s performance. Fortunately, our Service Department at Spreen Subaru is well equipped to restore your vehicle and get you back on the road with peace of mind. When you’re ready to get started, visit our dealership!

Battery

A sudden shift in temperature can greatly affect how your Crosstrek’s battery is able to function every morning. This is because your power cell’s capacity can suffer a 20 percent decrease, which impacts its output. The chain reaction will make your battery harder to start, which can cause permanent damage to the part. Luckily, our factory-trained technicians are able to run some diagnostic tests and perform a complete replacement if necessary. A major red flag to be cognizant of is your engine clicking when you attempt to bring it to life. If it doesn’t end up turning over, we suggest popping the hood for a visual inspection. If you notice corrosion or a swollen casing, you’re long overdue for a part swap.

Tires

While we may not experience an abundance of snowfall on the West Coast, there is still inclement weather that can impact your safety, especially around the mountains like Yosemite. With freezing rain hitting the pavement, it’s imperative that you get your tires rotated to evenly distribute wear, enhance traction, and improve their lifespan. While your vehicle is in our Service Department, we’ll also balance your tires and fill them with air, since cold weather can deplete their pressure. Are you currently running on summer tires? We strongly suggest opting for all-season alternatives, since their compound hardens in brisk weather, and they have an intricately designed tread pattern and sipes to evacuate water.

Windshield Wipers

After months of spring showers and summer storms, your windshield wipers have likely taken a beating. Rather than waiting until the last minute, we highly recommend assessing your blades’ current standing and purchasing a new set if necessary. Their end of effectiveness is typically characterized by streaks on your front window after they have been used. You might also notice them skipping across the glass when in motion. If any of these symptoms have happened, pull them from the window and inspect their appearance. If they’re tattered and worn, you’re in desperate need of new options. Fortunately, we supply silicon components, which last much longer than their conventional counterparts. Are you ready to begin some much-needed maintenance? Schedule an appointment online!
