Ever since its inception in 1997, the Subaru Forester has secured its spot as a staple among compact SUVs. With boundary-pushing mechanics, high-octane off-road capabilities, and a sophisticated cabin, it’s no wonder that this vehicle paves the way for other cars in its class. The Beginnings

The engineers at Subaru initially designed the Forester as a crossover version of the Impreza to satisfy the growing demand for athletic SUVs. It derived its structure from the compact car’s platform, and was built from the ground up with an all-new body, frame, and detailing. Its main draw was its versatility on off-road trails and interstates alike, and many drivers gravitated toward it for that exact reason. The first iteration started off with a muscular stance and robust edges, but the designers of the car quickly streamlined its presence over the next few years to create the sporty powerhouse we know and love today.

Middle Years

Ever since the Subaru Forester broke ground, it blazed a trail on the automotive market. It rapidly rose in the ranks for constantly revamping its beloved formula each year, and when the millennium hit, it became an icon on the automotive scene. Compared to the 1997 model, the early 2000s saw the Forester with a completely redesigned front fascia, fog lights, side paneling, and moldings. The cabins of each model throughout the next decade also reflected its modernization, as they came with updated instrument panels, dashboards, and seating. It’s worth mentioning that this was when the vehicle’s popular 2.5L 4-cylinder engine was introduced, and it has been trusted ever since. As you can see, the car hit its stride through the 2000s.

Current Timeline

From the 2010s to the 2020s, the Forester took its final form, and it did so by constantly making a strong first impression. With a revamped silhouette, low center of gravity, and trapezoidal front grille the fourth generation took the world by storm. Driving enthusiasts gravitated toward this SUV for its cabin accommodations too, as it showcased a split-folding rear seat to enhance storage capabilities. It was during this time that the car featured an all-new onboard computer and color display, which were hot commodities when they debuted. More recently in 2025, this model showcases Subaru Symmetrical AWD, an 11.6-inch touchscreen, and Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission, making it perfect for all types of driving styles.
